Iconic Chat Site Omegle Shuts Down, the Internet Reacts

These days, it seems like we spend a lot of our time waving goodbye to a wilder, freer age of the internet. Today is no exception, as one of the big hitters of 2010s coming of age online experiences has revealed its eternal retirement. Online chat website Omegle announced last night that it was shutting down after fourteen years of operation.

Its premise was chaotic, yet simple: anonymous users around the world were randomly paired in a one-on-one chat with each other. Depending on who you started talking to, the whole thing could lead to enlightenment, a hilarious screenshot, or just straight-up indecent exposure. It doesn't take a genius to see that there were some obvious issues here, but that didn't stop it from becoming a go-to source of entertainment for anyone with enough boredom and an internet connection.

In an announcement posted to the site, Omegle creator Leif K-Brooks explained how running it was becoming too financially and psychologically costly to continue. Over the past few years, it had faced increased scrutiny for "a malicious subset of users" pointed out by K-Brooks.

Writing that "the battle for Omegle has been lost, but the war against the Internet rages on", K-Brooks expressed his fear at internet culture becoming "focused largely on passive consumption, with much less opportunity for active participation and genuine human connection". At least today's twelve year olds are a little bit less likely to have their innocence ruined by a creepy stranger.
